The Easiest Curls Ever

Thank you Grosgrain for sharing a link to this fabulous tutorial on no heat curls!!!!!

Easiest Curls ever!!!!!

Once I watched the video I knew I had to try it. I love playing around with my hair, especially if it is something I can do real quick. All you need is an elastic headband to pull this off. Well, and some hair gel and hair spray, but it's so simple. I used one of those elastic headbands you see the sporty girls wearing (think soccer players). I highly recommend this. I have super long and thick hair and it worked great, but I do have a few tips if you have a lot of hair like mine.

The Back

She shares to make sure your hair is pretty much dry. Seriously, make sure it is if you have a lot of hair. Otherwise it won't dry. I have done this a few times and the more wet it was the less it worked. She shares to use some kind of stuff before wrapping the hair. I have used nothing at that point and hair gel. Slathering in some hair gel made it work a lot better for me as well. Since my hair is very heavy and thick, I also used some bobby pins in the back to help hold it in place. Then once I got up in the morning and was ready to do my hair, I took it out and sprayed it with hairspray that is suppose to fight humidity. I live in humid Florida. THIS IS A NECESSITY. It helps keep my hair from getting real frizzy.

Just like she says, the curls stay in really well. Of course, there will be some hair this won't work on, but I think if you make sure your hair is mostly dry, use enough gel during the rolling up part and spray it good once you take it out, it will be great.

Enjoy your weekend everyone! Maybe even try out something new for your hair?

  3. I'll def. be trying this in the next couple nights.

You hair looks amazing and you look beautiful.

My only question - did you brush yours once you took it out, just finished watching her video and she did, but I like how your's looks.

    1. It doesn't really look like she did... I could be wrong, but mine only ever looks like that when I just go straight from that to the hairspray. (:

  4. That video was like opening up a new world for me! My hair has changed so much over the years and in my early 20's it had this awesome wave that went away in my 30's. Now what is that all about? Anyway...I have bone straight hair so this might work for me to have some curl stay in. Without looking like my 5th grade coolness when I would braid little braids in my hair and have it all kinky and showing up thinking I was GORGEOUS! Oh, the 80's how I adored you. :)

  6. I'm giving it a whirl right now. I have long and SUPER thick hair... The back keeps falling out even though it is wrapped around several times so I might give bobby pins a go.

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. You look adorable! I love the curls!

I live on a tropical island (Okinawa, Japan) so the humidity is CRAZY here. What products do you use for you hair? I have never had a problem with frizz until we moved here and even after 3 years I cannot seem to find the right products to fight it.

  16. "My only question - did you brush yours once you took it out"

I actually just ran my fingers through my hair. I don't have a brush, just a big detangler comb, so I didn't want to use that. Plus, I like my curls more curly looking.

"What products do you use for you hair?"

I use (at the moment) Garnier Fructis anti-humidity stuff. They have all kinds. I'm sure there might be some better stuff out there, but I try to find things that work that I can easily pick up from the store.

  21. Ok, I have a question. I watched the tutorial, and your hair looks different than hers. Is it from how you rolled it? It's like her hair (in the video) is curly *around* her face and on the bottom, but not so much in the back. Your hair, however, looks curly all over. Did you do anything different (besides the extra tips you added)? I want to try this, and I'd appreciate your help! Thanks!

  22. Sarah,

I think the two main reasons mine looks curlier is because I used gel before rolling them up and I didn't brush them out like she did. I just ran my fingers through them. And, everyone's hair is different so I'm sure the way it takes to curl effects the look. I say give it a try and see what happens :)

  31. Thanks for sharing, I've got to try this! My hair won't hold a curl from a curling iron, but always does really well with curlers left over night. They're such a pain though, I never bother with them, so this will be SO much easier!

  34. I've been doing this for a few months when I first discovered that video. I love it! My hair never holds curl and this totally works even for me! I usually spray some kind of curl spray in my almost dry hair, then I wrap it like in the video, then I spray it with hairspray while it's rolled up. I also spray it again once I unroll it. I use Bumble and bumble hairspray and it doesn't leave it crunchy or looking like it's been over sprayed! LOL

  37. Just saw this on Pinterest as well. Love your curls and you look so darn cute in that pic!!

I'm totally going to try this tonight if I can find a headband that will work with out having to run out and buy one. Thanks for posting about it!

  38. I tried this, and had two problems. One the elastic annoyed me and made me feel almost "headachey" So I ended up taking it out, but it did work! I think I am going to try again with one of those crochet style super stretchy headbands.
Second problem, when I did take it out I had a hard time getting the headband out. I ended up causing the back curls to be frizzy and messy because I had to pick them out of the band. How did you get yours out with such nice curls in the back?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jennifer,

Def find a headband that doesn't hurt. Mine had been stretched out a bit already, so it didn't bother me at all. Plus, I put it up higher in the front than she did because it felt better that way. As for the back, I just was very careful when I undid it. I found where I had ended and just unraveled in reverse.

  46. OH MY GOSH!!! I love this! My hair is really long like yours, and with two little ones, it's so hard to have the time to really curl it anymore. This is awesome! I can't wait to see if it works on my thick hair! :) thanks! (You look absolutely ADORABLE btw!!!)

  47. Love this! Thanks. You used hair gel? As in old fashioned goopy hair gel? It doesn't get hard and crunchy? I've tried it and my hair gets frizzy in the humidity as well. I don't have any hair gel but I need to try something to get the curls to hold better. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Christine,

I did use gel, but it is a lightweight kind and I didn't go crazy with it. Just enough to kind of coat it a bit. It helped my hair a lot since it's long and heavy. You could try other styling products that you have found work on your hair. Since I didn't use a ton of gel, it wasn't all hard and crunchy at all.

  49. What is the best type of elastic/headband to use? I have a very small head and the hair in the front stayed, but not the hair in the back. Suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I just tried this last night, and it worked AMAZINGLY! I have very thin/fine hair that doesn't like to hold curls. While it was wet, I lightly coated my hair with Pantene Pro-V Weightless Bodybuilding Gel for Fine hair. This morning I sprayed some hair spray in it before taking it out. And it is wonderful! My hair is NOT crunchy from the gel or hairspray and the curls are super cute. I'm definitely doing this hairstyle more often! Thank's for posting this link!!

  51. Hi! Just found your blog through a link - but I have two girls and am from Hampton Roads as well...and love the curl tutorial! Can't wait to read more1

  52. "What is the best type of elastic/headband to use?"

You might just have to do a trial and error. I used an elastic sports headband, but some people like the looser thicker stretchy headbands you can buy. Maybe try making your own with elastic or knit fabric to fit your head the way you like it? I had to use bobby pins in the back to hold it in place. Maybe even use hair claws to help hold it in place? As long as you don't sleep on the back of your head, they wouldn't bother you.

  53. I'm just now discovering your blog *love*. Then this post--I tried watching the video and it says I have to rent it...for $29.99. Yikes! I wish I knew how to get those curls. (o:

  54. Ooops...never mind, I should have stayed on the page longer....I see what you are saying now!!! Wow. It used to be free to watch. It's a really easy technique. Maybe I'll do a video tutorial myself and keep it free? lol here are some pics another girl did of when she did it: http://thepapermama.blogspot.com/2011/07/hair-tutorial-no-heat-curl.html
All you do is wrap your hair around a hairband at night. I suggest more dry than not. I also added some gel to my hair before wrapping it around. Then the next morning when you take it out, it should be curly :) At least for many :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks for the response. I suppose what I don't understand is, how do you get it to wrap in the head band thing?
And YES to your video tutorial! (o:

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well, you begin on the front sides with a chunk and wrap it up and then under the headband. Then you keep adding more hair to the chunk and repeating each time you grab more hair until you are at the back. Maybe check out youtube and see if anyone else has a video? Maybe search "no heat curls" or "headband curls"?

  57. Have you tried the sock curl method? It's another super easy way to get curls overnight and I love it! I'll definitely be trying this one out, too. Here's the video link for sock curls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FV-YO46E8Y&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  59. Did you have any trouble taking your hair out in the morning? I have hair about as long as yours, and when I tried to take it out of the headband it got super tangled and was very difficult to work with... Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Jamie,

It was the very first time I did it a little bit. But, I just always worked really hard to do a really neat job to prevent that. I also bobby pinned some of the back part in place to help it stay put better in hopes of preventing that as well. Oh, and try to sleep with your head sideways. That might help keep it from tangling more as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I, too, have long thick hair. I've been using this technique for several weeks. I put the headband around my head like I would normally (so it's behind my ears but a little lower on my forehead) but I've seen some tutorials that show the headband around the head, more like a 70s hippie style. I take a chunk of hair and dampen it slightly before I wrap it (just getting my hand and fingers wet then running them through the chunk of hair). It's always dry by morning. This technique saves me an enormous amount of time in the morning and is such a nice soft curl. I've experimented with several different headbands. The tightness of the curl seems to be more dependent on how big of a chunk of hair that you use more so than the width of the headband. Going to try using the curling gel. Sounds like a logical idea.

    1. Hi :) Unfortunately not everything works for everyone so if your hair takes to curl you should try some of the other no heat options out there. If you google "no heat curls" you will get lots of different ways to try this.
