The Big Girl Room Makeover

My little girl is going to be turning four this summer, so I wanted to go ahead and work on a "big girl" room for her. I wanted it to be whimsical and artsy like. I started working on it when we moved to Pace in October, but the morning sickness and all really put me behind. I can now say though that I am finally finished!!!!!!!!! After much work and shopping for just the right things, it all came together! Let me give you a tour :)

Let's begin with this side of the room.

Big Girl Room Makeover

This dresser has been in my family for a bit. It was my moms when she was little, then I received it when I was a teenager. It has been through a few transformations, but for my daughter's room I upholstered the drawers with batting and a black/white striped fabric. I just used a staple gun to get it on. Then I put some pretty glass knobs on it.

Big Girl Room Makeover

I draped some ribbon and two types of pompom trim across the top of the mirror.

Big Girl Room Makeover

This awesome lamp came from Urban Outfitters last summer (when it was on clearance). I would stop in to see if one of my friends was working and I saw this one time and knew I had to get it for this eventual transformation! The hair bow jar is actually a cookie jar I picked up from Ross.

The black/gem frame was a $1 aisle find at Target. The piggy bank was another $1 find from a few years back. I love finding great finds there :) The pink frame came from TJ Maxx.

And Target strikes again. This "print" is actually a t-shirt I saw in the girls clothing section there. I thought it was cute, but thought it would be even more awesome framed! I love it. Find it here.

Big Girl Room Makeover

This chair was a thrift store makeover. I scored it for $7 and redid the fabric and the paint. See below for the before pic. The fuzzy rug is from Hobby Lobby and I made the heart pillow for my daughter on Valentines Day (pattern found here).

This is a chandelier I made from fabric scraps and ribbon that I had on hand. I knotted the strips on an old lampshade. It was simple and cheap. To get inspired, I searched the internet for "fabric chandelier." Then using parts from a few tutorials/ideas I did this.

These pretty little doll note cards came from Anthropologie (but you can find them on Amazon here). I bought some pretty scrapbook papers to put them on and framed them. This was another find last summer that I saved waiting for the room transformation.

The shelf and black fabric drawers came from Target. The bees were handmade by me (pattern available here), and I made the little pink doll last Christmas for my daughter.

Big Girl Room Makeover

The bedding was (yet again, I know ;), a find at Target on Clearance. I made the headboard from a bed sheet and a piece of foam that you put on top of a bed for extra comfort. So, it was really cheap to do.
Plate and Spoon on her bed is a free pattern I offer here.

Big Girl Room Makeover

This piece of artwork was fun to make. I found the old frame at an antique store and spray painted it white (it originally had a beautiful painting by a local artist who is now 90 yrs. old. It is now in my craft room :). I cut up a foam poster board to fit it, covered it in linen, and then added everything else.
For the felt letters, I traced and cut them out, then embroidered them. I glued them on with fabric glue. I also used fabric glue to glue on the yarn to spell joy. The peace letters were ironed on (I used heat n' bond for that. I traced the letters backwards on the stuff, ironed it on, but out the letters, then ironed them on the fabric).
The little doilies came from JoAnn's. I made a rosette (tutorial here), fabric yo-yo, and two types of loop flowers (tutorial here).

The curtains were another thing I added some spice to. I sewed on some extra fabric leftover from the dresser to the top. I also made a bunch of yarn pom poms to sew on underneath of that as well.

And last but not least, I spray painted that star black (it used to be pink). That also came from Hobby Lobby. And if interested, the kitchen came from Target.

So that is it! My labor of love :) Hope you enjoyed it and find inspiration from it. It is one of my favorite rooms in the house right now. And best of all, my daughter loves it.

All the details are just fabulous! I love how much of this was done by you and by your loving hand! So awesome! I have those same note cards from Anthro and my newest project "to do" is to make a ribbon chandy! This is so inspirational! Your daughter must feel so grown up!

It's beautiful! Got my creative juices flowing, too. I love how you toned down the girly and added some grown-up black, but still left it just-girly-enough.

It all looks amazing! I especially love the chair and cushion (love that pattern), the dressing table, and the artwork. Did you do the actual make over over a period of time, or did you gather everything and then hit it?

Your use of colour is beautiful in this room. I love the style the only thing I think it's missing is a big area rug partically under the bed. It would break up the neutral walls and carpet.

"Did you do the actual make over over a period of time, or did you gather everything and then hit it?"

It was kind of a mixture of both. I had the idea in my head last summer, so when I saw things that I thought would fit I bought them. But I waited until we moved to begin the true transformation. Then as I could budget, I worked on one piece of the room at a time :)
