Mod Sailor All Grown Up

Quite a few of you said you would love a grown up version of the Mod Sailor Dress. Well, I was browsing around on BurdaStyle the other night and look at what I found! The Kasia Skirt!

It's a free skirt pattern that resembles the Mod Sailor dress look! And much more grown up like :) This would be much easier to make and just add a shirt than try to make a whole dress. I love skirts like this! I have added it to my to do list, but wanted to share it with you all. There are a lot of people who have made this, and I was really drawn to the red striped one by BurdaStyle user JhurieneSling.

Let me know if you give it a try. I hope you all have a fabulous Monday!!!!!

Round Fabric Pinwheel Necklace

So my tutorial I was working on is taking forever, so I had to take a break. This popped in my head yesterday after finding the neck ring and I decided this would be my "something different" to work on for a little bit. Plus, I'm always trying to think of ways to use up my scraps :)

So come with me and I'll show you how to make your own Round Fabric Pinwheel Necklace!

It's a beautiful statement necklace and the possibilities are endless with it!

What you need:

1. Scrap knits and a larger piece of knit for the back.

2. A Neck Ring necklace.
3. Hot Glue Gun
4. Needle and Coordinating Thread
5. Jump Rings (I only used two)
6. Spray Starch
7. Iron

A. Take your scrap fabric and cut rectangular pieces. I just played around with the sizes. The longer it is, the more folds it will have. The taller it is, the bigger the pinwheel will be.

B. Take your pieces and spray them with spray starch and iron. This helps the fold stay.

C. Accordion fold the piece of fabric long ways and sew together in the middle. Then wrap the thread around the middle and knot it. This helps it look good.

D. Spray again with starch and iron on each side of the accordion fold. Then trim the ends to be even.

E. Then pull two ends, one from each side, together and hot glue. Repeat on other side. Spray again with starch if you like, but DO NOT iron it again. It just helps it stay stiff.

F. Grab the neck ring and place the pinwheels how you would like them to be, making sure at least two points would touch the necklace. Those points are where you will attach jump rings.
Hot Glue together where they overlap.

G. Then flip it over, wrong side facing up. Put hot glue all over the middle and place a large piece of knit fabric on top quickly. Then flip it over.

H. Trim the edges so none of the back fabric is showing when pinwheels are right side facing.

I. Hot glue jump rings in between the fabric pinwheels and the back fabric so it can slip on the neck ring. Then go around and secure all the edges by hot gluing really well.

J. Then slip on the neck ring through the jump rings, put on a pretty outfit and your necklace, and get ready to say 'Thank You!" to all the people who will compliment you :)

I would love to see what you make, whether a necklace like this, or using the fabric pinwheels in some other fashion. Share in the Flickr Group :)

I received a package in the mail a bit ago and was totally surprised. I had forgotten all about this project! It was two copies of the 2011 Sewing Calendar! One for me and one for me to share with someone else. I am choosing to share the extra copy with one of you!

Featured in the new 2011 Sewing Calendar

The Calendar is amazing. It has over 100 sewing projects in it to try out during the year, a glossary of simple sewing techniques, and pattern pages that open to 8.5" by 11". So many amazing people have projects in here.

Stop by the blog to enter for a chance to win a copy!

(CLOSED)

I will leave this open for at least a week. I will change it when it's closed. Now I'm off to work on a tutorial that is taking me a while to do......so you might not hear from me for a few more days. I just have to finish it! lol

Organizing the Fridge

I totally took advantage of the vast amount of school supplies available now for this little project.

I'm organizing the fridge!

I had wanted to tidy up our refrigerator. I love having photos, artwork, etc. on the fridge, but it was looking kind of messy.

What I used

So I bought some wooden rules and a roll of adhesive magnet strip. I already had the clothespins, paint, glue gun, and the other little things (paint brush, etc.) needed to make this.

The back magnet strip

I took apart the clothespins and painted them. Once they dried, I put them back together.
Then I stuck on the magnet strips. Mine had an adhesive back to them, but one kept falling off so I had to hot glue that one on. Then lastly, I hot glued on the clothespins making sure to spread them out evenly.

Organized photos

Now my photos are organized.

Organized Artwork

And so is my daughter's artwork (which we change out a lot).

This is "Eva" from Wall-e

I had to share one of my favorites. This is "Eva" from Wall-e. Doesn't she do a good job? She draws the little floaty arms and blue eyes! I love how she picks up on details!

Anyone else using school supplies to create something new?

Family

I had been saving these pictures from April until I finished the As You Like It Pattern, so now I can share! I like to get family pics every few months, so when my parents came to visit this past April I took the opportunity to have them help to that.

I made my dress, which was my Mother's Day dress as well. I wanted to coordinate with the dress I made for my daughter, but not exactly. I really loved the colors. I just kind of winged it, but I think I would try a pattern next time.

I also made our headbands. So much fun to make!

I love these two so much and am so blessed by God to be married to my husband and a mom to my daughter.

And I love these two a lot as well. Thanks mom and dad for your help!

New Pattern: As You Like It Dress & Shirt

This has been in the making since April (yes, that is how old most of these pictures are), so I'm super duper happy to have it all finished! Hooray! This pattern has been so much fun for me and my testers all say they really enjoyed it too. Let me share a bit about it.

New Pattern! August 2010

I really enjoy creating a pattern that allows for the use of a variety of fabric and the ability to fit a wide range of sizes (slim to plus). Now, it can't always happen, but I think I got pretty close with one. That is why I chose to name it the "As You Like it Dress & Shirt" because you make it how you like it!

Before the balloons got away

The above dress is a more simple one, which is what the main set of instructions share on how to create.

You can add all sorts of fun embellishments! Back of dress-Tie straps

Then I go into a bit more detail and share on how I changed it up a bit. Like above, I did a bunch of different pieces with all kinds of embellishments, trims, and iron ons.

Soda always makes a photoshoot betterAll smiles

The pattern shares measurements to create a shirt or a dress, but you can alter that length to what you like.

Elastic back

I share two ways to do the back. One with the braided elastic (seen above) and the other with shirring (see further down).

Getting excited yet?

Ruffled Tiers Shirred Back
I share tips on how to make a tiered dress/shirt too. This was made using old shirts of mine and has a shirred back.

Button details

Altering the pattern

I even share how to alter the pattern to create a dress like the one above.

Transitions through seasons

Will you lookie there? You can even add a long sleeve (or short sleeve) underneath for the fall! Some little ones who are full of a little more love might not be able to add a shirt underneath, but many will.

Add a shirt underneath!

Now presenting the amazing and beautiful creations of my pattern testers:

From Alida from I Make Stuff:

Amazing! She took some time to make this dress! I told all my testers they could go as simple as they need to because I understand time and all. But this girl whipped this up in like two days! Isn't is cute? And her daughter so precious?

From Beth from From the Hive:

as you like it dress size 8 as you like it dress as you like it dress -outside ruffles
Beth was a go getter with making one for her daughter and for the girl she watches during the summer. She did both dresses in knits. I love how she tiered the hearts one. Both girls are beautiful little models!

From Corey of Living and Loving Every Minute of It:

Jul1310_0024e2wJul1310_0027ewJul1310_0038ew
Doesn't Corey take beautiful pictures? And her daughter is a gorgeous model. Corey made my day when she said this is one of her favorite things she's made for her daughter in a while.

From Nicole at Cole's Corner and Creations:

I love the little extras she gave to these dresses! And look at her cutie rocking that cast! Nicole said this pattern actually had great timing with the cast situation. Her daughter wasn't able to wear her normal clothes because the cast wouldn't fit over it, but she was able to wear these dresses.
